Students are expected to uphold the [institution]’s policies on academic honesty, including but not limited to refraining from cheating, plagiarism, misrepresenting work, and inappropriate collaboration. This extends to the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools without proper citation, documentation, or authorization. Additionally, students must adhere to the professional and ethical standards of their respective disciplines.
As your professor, I support the use of AI as a learning aid. If you choose, you may use generative AI to assist with homework and understanding course material. In class, I will occasionally demonstrate AI’s capabilities—including its strengths and limitations—in relation to our coursework. However, for exams and assessments, you will be required to affirm that you have not used AI to generate responses.
If I suspect substantial or inappropriate use of AI in your work, I reserve the right to request a private meeting where you will be asked to explain your submission process. In this meeting, you should be prepared to reference the sources and tools you used, including browser histories if necessary. While I will not request to access or review these records directly, you must be able to discuss them directly as part of your explanation.
Although AI detection tools remain unreliable, the process by which you created your work can be evaluated through critical questioning. The tool may be new, but the problem (slacking off) is not. If you have engaged meaningfully with the assignment and have not relied on AI to bypass the learning process, you should have no difficulty demonstrating your understanding.
Any student found violating academic integrity policies or the ethical standards of their discipline may face academic sanctions in accordance with [institution policy].
